We were honoured to host a delegation from the  today for a high-level courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, and members of the University Management Board. The visit marked the commencement of a vital pilot exercise centred on the Framework for Excellence in Intellectual Property (IP) Management in Kenyan Universities.

Innovation took center stage as ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ convened students and staff for a dynamic Innovation Challenge, unveiling practical, research-driven solutions to real-world problems through creativity, mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, recently joined a delegation of 13 Vice-Chancellors on a transformative trip to South Africa aimed at strengthening innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization in higher education.

Technology is only as inclusive as the languages it understands. For many years, several African languages have remained underrepresented in the datasets that power artificial intelligence systems. This gap has real consequences. Voice technologies fail to recognize local accents, translation tools overlook indigenous languages, and entire communities are excluded from the digital economy. Through deliberate research and innovation, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ is helping to change that narrative.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ successfully hosted and participated in the Inter-University Hackfest 2026, held on 21 February 2026 at the Main Campus. The event brought together students, software and hardware engineers, and technology enthusiasts from various universities under the theme “Build. Collaborate. Innovate.â€�

The Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ participated in the Nairobi AI Forum 2026, held on 9th–10th February 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya. The forum was co-hosted by the Government of Kenya, the Government of Italy, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with international development agencies, industry leaders, academic institutions, and innovation hubs.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ recently demonstrated its growing influence in Kenya’s innovation ecosystem through active participation in the Innovation Week, an event that brings together universities, researchers, innovators, industry leaders, and development partners from across the country.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ took part in the NIRU Pre-Hackathon, a national mentorship and capacity-building programme organized by the National Intelligence Research University (NIRU) as part of the lead-up to the National AI Hackathon.

The pre-hackathon was held on 19 and 20 January 2026 in Nairobi and attracted widespread national interest, with more than 2,000 applications submitted by innovators and institutions from across the country. From these applications, 185 teams were selected to participate in the intensive mentorship programme.

The event provided a structured platform for participating teams to refine their ideas through expert mentorship, technical guidance, and innovation support. Participants engaged in focused sessions covering problem identification, solution design, development of minimum viable products (MVPs), and the alignment of innovations with national development priorities.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ was among the institutions represented at the pre-hackathon, with its teams actively participating in the mentorship activities. Notably, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ teams were among the top 100 teams selected to advance to the finals, which are scheduled to take place in March 2026. This achievement highlights the quality, relevance, and innovation potential of the solutions developed by the university s participants.

Through this engagement, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, research, and experiential learning. The university s participation in the NIRU Pre-Hackathon underscores its dedication to nurturing innovative talent and preparing students to contribute meaningfully to national and global technological advancement in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Kenya's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem is being shaped within its institutions of higher learning, with ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ emerging as a key transformative hub. Recently, the university underwent a peer-led evaluation led by the , utilizing the Entrepreneurial Institution Maturity Framework (EIMF) to assess its readiness and identify strategies to enhance its institutional effectiveness and entrepreneurial capacity.
