ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's Quantum Leap: Vice-Chancellor's Historic Meeting with Microsoft Sparks Innovation Revolution

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, embarked on a momentous visit to Microsoft offices in Nairobi. The meeting, held with the Managing Director of Microsoft Africa Development Centre (ADC), Ms. Catherine Muraga, laid the groundwork for a promising collaboration between ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ and Microsoft.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ School of Science, Engineering & Technology (SSET) has established a thriving Microsoft community within its campus, spearheaded by six dedicated Microsoft Student Ambassadors and boasting over 300 active student participants. Leveraging Microsoft's cloud resources, including Microsoft Azure for students, Microsoft 365, and GitHub, the university has been committed to empowering its students and faculty with cutting-edge technology and resources.

One notable achievement that highlights ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's commitment to innovation and digital literacy is the graduation of its lecturers from the prestigious Microsoft Leap Program. This accomplishment signifies the institution's dedication to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and its commitment to providing quality education to its students.

The meeting between Prof. Henry Kiplangat and Ms. Catherine Muraga centered on various areas of collaboration that would mutually benefit both ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ and Microsoft. These areas include:

Research and Development: One of the primary objectives of the collaboration is to enhance the research and innovation culture at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ. With the potential partnership with the Microsoft African Research Institute (MARI), led by Jackie Oneil, the institution aims to tap into Microsoft's extensive research resources and expertise.

Innovation: ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ seeks to collaborate with Microsoft Garage to promote ideation and strengthen capacity in design thinking. Workshops for both faculty and students will be organized to foster creativity and problem-solving skills.

Hackathons and Bootcamps: To encourage practical learning, the partnership will see the organization of hackathons and bootcamps in Cloud Computing and Data Science. These events will provide students with hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills.

Guest Lectures: ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ has initiated discussions with Irene Githinji, and there are anticipations of Microsoft engineers participating in class and lab sessions this semester. These interactions will expose students to real-world scenarios and industry insights.

Curriculum Review: The collaboration will involve a comprehensive curriculum review to ensure that academic programs align with industry standards. Microsoft will provide support for cloud computing resources, including software and virtual labs, to facilitate seamless learning experiences.

Research Fellowships and Joint Publications: Upon the approval of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's Data Science program, potential partnerships with MARI for research fellowships and joint publications will be explored. This will further strengthen the institution's research capabilities.

Upskilling and Immersion Programs: The collaboration will extend to upskilling programs, industry-based projects, internships, and mentorship opportunities for both students and faculty. These initiatives will prepare students for the job market and equip them with the skills demanded by the industry.

The meeting between Prof. Henry Kiplangat and Ms. Catherine Muraga marked a pivotal moment in the history of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ. It signifies the institution's commitment to providing world-class education and fostering a culture of innovation and research. With Microsoft's support and expertise, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ is poised to produce graduates who are not only academically sound but also well-equipped to thrive in the ever-evolving technological landscape. This collaboration holds the promise of shaping a brighter future for both the university and its students, ensuring they remain at the forefront of innovation and excellence.
