The Voter by Chinua Achebe

The Avid Readers Forum held its inaugural session this year on 3 February 2026.  This session was moderated by Ms Victoria Okeke, the student coordinator and the lead reader. The selected text for the session was Chinua Achebe鈥檚 The Voter, a critique of the state of electoral politics in post-independence Africa. Before the reading, Barbra Chemwachar offered a brief background of Achebe, casting a spotlight on his central position in African literature. He is widely regarded as the father of modern African literature. Born on 16 November 1930 in Ogidi, Nigeria, Achebe was a novelist, poet and critic whose works profoundly shaped modern African storytelling. His first novel and magnum opus, things Fall Apart, remains one of the most influential African texts globally. She also shared two of his famous quotes, 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 like someone鈥檚 story, write your own,鈥 and 鈥淭he world is like a mask dancing. If you want to see it well, you don鈥檛 stand in one place.鈥

Self-fulfilled Destruction: A reflection on Achebe鈥檚 The Voter

The first Agora session for the year was ushered in in spectacular fashion. Chinua Achebe鈥檚 prowess to provoke thought was felt throughout the session. There was no shortage of themes to reflect the position of our character in the political field as an African and particularly a Kenyan polity. How else would the power to inform patterns through literature during elections have been felt other than a reflection on The Voter.

A fine meeting point of tradition and modernity: A reflection on Ogot鈥檚 Land without Thunder

Grace Ogot鈥檚 鈥淟and without Thunder鈥 is one of those rare stories that seem to reach deep into the reader鈥檚 soul and disturb something ancient, a quiet recognition of how life, death, faith, and tradition intertwine. When I finished reading it, I was struck not just by the tragedy of Owila, but by the haunting silence that followed the thunder, a silence that spoke of guilt, broken balance, and the struggle between the living and the dead.
